New Twins Ballpark

Well, for those of you who are anxiously awaiting a new year of Twins baseball and longing for the sights and smells of outdoor baseball, here are some really interesting specs, pictures and comparisons between the new ballpark and our beloathed Metrodome.  Not sure if I just made up the word beloathed or not, but it seems to perfectly describe my sentiments.

What could have been?

larry fitzgerald

It's official. Larry will not be joining the Vikings anytime soon. Sorry to see it, especially when he told everyone who would listen he wanted to play in MN. I kind of always like the idea of getting a faster more athletic version of Cris Carter. Fitzgerald signed a 4 yr deal that including at $15M signing bonus and $30M in guarantees.

Raising Zona broke the news.

How To Properly Build An NBA Team

After watching a thorough beat down at the hands of the Utah Jazz, it made me wonder, how does a successful NBA front office compare to the Wolves GM? The Utah Jazz have made the playoffs 21 times in the last 28 years, this includes a Western Conference Finals appearance last year. They make a great example of how good a small market team can be, when properly run.

Here's how the Jazz break down. Seven of their players were acquired through the draft. Two of their three perennial All-Stars were signed in Free Agency. For the most part the Jazz continually build better and better teams through the draft with an occasional free agent signing.

Based on playing time and points, 4 of the top 6 players this season are Jazz draft picks. The other two - Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur were both giving 6 yr deals back in 2004.

Andrei Kirilenko - 1999 1st rounder.

Jarron Collins - 2001 2nd rounder.

Deron Williams - 2005 1st rounder.

CJ Miles - 2005 2nd rounder.

Ronnie Brewer - 2006 1st rounder.

Paul Millsap - 2006 2nd rounder.

This group with Boozer and Okur are wining at a consistant .600 - .650 pace.

Now compare the Jazz success through the draft with the hopeless Timberwolves going back to 1999 when the Jazz selected Kirilenko.

Wally Szczerbiak - 1999 1st rounder (traded multiple times).

William Avery - 1999 1st rounder (not in league).

Louis Bullock - 1999 2nd rounder (not in league).

Igor Rakocevic - 2000 2nd rounder (not in league).

Loren Woods - 2001 2nd rounder (not in league).

Marcus Taylor - 2002 2nd rounder (not in league).

rick rickert

Ndubi Ebi - 2003 1st rounder (not in league).

Rick Rickert - 2003 2nd rounder (not in league).

Blake Stepp - 2004 2nd rounder (not in league).

McCants & Wright - 2005 picks on team.

Loukas Mavrokefalidis - 2006 2nd rounder (not in league).

Bobby Jones - 2006 2nd rounder (6 teams in 2 years).

Craig Smith - 2006 2nd rounder on team.

Brandon Roy 2006 1st rounder Traded to Portland (NBA All-Star).

From 1999 to 2005 not a single Timberwolves pick is still in the NBA other than the oft traded Wally (on 4th team in last 3 years). And what about Free Agent signings in that span? Nothing other than Sam, Spree and Smith years ago.

I guess the point I'm making is you can't expect to build a successful NBA team when 8 of your 9 draft picks in a 6 year span aren't even playing in the league anymore.

Successful NBA teams are built through the draft year after year after year supplemented by the occasional free agent signing (ie. Jazz, Spurs, Pistons). If the Timberwolves hope to build something better in the next decade they should do by hiring a GM who understands talent and who understands the draft. Trading for a bunch on young kids on the worst East team and planting them in the West won't get it done.

It will however give you a shot at the worst record and potentially the #1 pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. Let's only hope you finally learn how to use that pick.

Christian Laettner (1992 3rd overall), Isaiah Rider (1993 5th overall), Donyell Marshall (1994 4th overall) and Ray Allen (1996 5th overall Traded) might be available to help guide you on how best to use it.

Nathan, He’s Good

joe nathan

Along with discussing his impending free agency and how it relates to Jonathan Papelbon, a recent article in the Boston Herald noted that Joe Nathan "has the lowest ERA of any reliever with at least 200 innings since 2004." That's the year when Nathan joined the Twins and during that four-year span he's gone 19-8 with a 1.94 ERA, 160 saves, and a 355-to-80 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 282.1 innings.   -from Aarongleeman.com

Vikings Final Offseason Need: DE

Entering this year's off season the Vikings needed to fill major holes at DE. A total lack of the pass rush last year and unexpected health complications have left the Vikings scrambling. Last week the Vikings addressed needs in pass coverage and at WR by adding a deep threat in Bernard. It has been an extremely active offseason, one that included the hopes of signing Justin Smith from Cinci, but the 49ers jumped in and nixed that deal.

This leaves the Vikings still searching for answers at DE in an offseason John Clayton from ESPN has deemed a Winner for the Vikes and 4 other teams (Browns, Jags, Eagles, Fins).

Going into this years free agency period ESPN ranked 41 available DE's with 4 of those clearly a cut above everyone else. Those four are: Jared Allen, Chris Canty, Antwan Odom and Justin Smith. Allen who rated out at 88 signed a franchise tag deal worth about $9 million. Smith rated out at 75 just signed a 6 yr deal worth about $7.5 million/yr.

justin smith

Smith was expected to visit the Vikings but was signed by the 49ers before even flying to MN.

tamba haliThe top DE's in this years free agent class set a $5-$9 million/yr range. But if you look to the 2006 and 2007 NFL drafts you see mid-range 1st round picks delivering a better value. The best example is 2006, the Chiefs selected Tamba Hali from Penn State with the 20th pick. He signed a 5 yr deal rumored to be worth about $10-$15 million. (His scout grade was 87 the time of the draft) When you look at his numbers in 2006 & 2007 he's very comparable to Justin Smith. Hali recorded 8 and 7.5 sacks, Smith has recorded 8, 6, 7.5 and 2 sacks his last four years. You could argue Hali has the better upside and the better value.

In 2007 three DE's were taken in the early-mid 1st round: Jamaal Anderson as the 8th pick to the Falcons, Adam Carriker as the 13th pick to the Rams and Jarvis Moss the 17th pick to the Broncos. Anderson signed for 5 yrs at $31 million, Carriker 5 yrs at $14 million and Moss 5 yrs at $18 million. Five more DE's were taken in the second round, picks 54, 56, 57, 58 and 62 were all DE selections. None of the 2007 1st round selections have panned out so far but it's early.

When looking back at the 2006 and 2007 drafts, looking at this years free agent class, building through the draft can work and often times is much cheaper.

The Vikings have the 17th and 47th overall picks in the 2008 draft, they also own the 73rd from Den and the 82nd. I wouldn't be surprised if the vikings used two of those 4 picks on a pass rushing DE. When you can pick a guy like Tamba Hali 20th overall for 1/4th the cost of a aging Justin Smith, why not try on a draft day flyer?

The only other move the Vikings might want to make is an incentives based deal with a past-his-prime player like Javon Kearse. Might throwing a couple million at a guy in the hopes he can deliver 5-8 sacks be worth it? I think so.

the freak

There isn't much of anything left in the free agent pool so the best shot the Vikings have at filling their gaping need at DE might have to come through the draft. In the coming weeks we'll break down the DE's available in the 2008 draft as we move toward April 26th and 27th.

Twins Update March 1st

With spring training starting here's a Twins update.

Twins ownership will throw in an additional $22 million in ballpark upgrades, bringing the ownerships share to $152 million of the $412 projected cost. The upgrades will include a high-def 103 ft x 57 ft screen.  I love the quote from Twins exec Kevin Smith, "Our feeling is we get one shot at this, let's do it right".  MLB Link

Liriano continus his comeback but at less than 100 percent.  So far the Twins staff has cut back Liriano's bullpen sessions.  While pitching this winter in the Dominican, Francisco was hitting 95-mph with his fastball.  As the only hope to replace Santana on this year's staff let's hope for consistant high 90's.  MLB Link

Twins closer Joe Nathan is still looking for a new contract.  Nathan prefers to get something done during spring training.  The self imposed deadline has been set for March 31st.  MLB Link

Torii Hunter's departure to LA has left a gaping void in center field.  Gomez seems to have the inside track.  Three players all under 25 lacking MLB experience is what the Twins will have to choose from. StarTrib Link

The Pohlad family has said they plan to own the Twins well into the future.  That can only mean they will keep the team for next 20 years or they are waiting to reap the rewards of new stadium revenues before they sell the team for $350 million in 6 years.  PioneerPress Link

The new stadium has yet to receive a name.  Gold Seat insiders have been hoping for BestBuy Ballpark.
