David Carr to Vikings?

February 14th, 2007 by Drew Billy Beane of Blogging · No Comments

ProFootBallTalk.com is reporting that the Houston Texans are shopping Quarterback David Carr. They along with other media sources have suggested that the Vikings are very interested. Carr’s career in Houston has been interesting. Since 2002 he has had an overall quarterback rating of 75.0.

While his numbers don’t seem overly impressive I believe that he has more talent than he’s been able to show. Since taking over the QB position he has not (until recently) been given the opportunity to give the ball to a playmaker. Couple that with the offensive line’s inability to pass block, I am not one bit surprised that his numbers look the way that they do. On the Vikings he would immediately inherit a above average offensive line, a workhorse runningback. Certainly none of the Vikings receivers can compare to Andre Johnson, the presence of a good line should improve his numbers immensely.

I think that Carr could benefit the Vikings in several ways. The first is that he is a veteran QB that is mobile and has a rocket arm. That would allow Tavarius Jackson to take some more time to learn the NFL and not be rushed. I personally believe that rushing T-Jack will not equate to wins. With Carr at the helm, the Vikings have the ability (given that Chili’s kick-ass offense produces) to make it to the playoffs.

The second reason why I think that this is a great move has more to do with economic/draft reasons. Last year the Texans were foolish to give Carr an 8 million dollar “bonus” over two years. If they keep him past July 1st of this year they are required to give him the last half of that bonus. The Texans are looking to draft franchise QB (at the 8th spot), they would love to free up that money. That bodes well for a trade with the Vikings. We have a need, they want to unload. All of this translates to a mid-round draft pick to get Carr. Some sites have suggested that Carr could be had for a 4th round pick.

The third reason why the Vikes need to make a move for Carr has to do with the speculation of using their 7th pick in the first round on a QB. Many experts like the idea of drafting the “best available” player when stuck at a draft position like #7. If Brady Quinn would drop (which seems likely… see Matt Leinart last year), in my opinion that would be a huge waste. We traded up last year to draft T-Jack and to go ahead and use another high draft pick on a QB would be a waste. If the Vikings are hell bent on getting a impact WR, it is likely that they could trade down to get a guy like Teddy Ginn Jr. (or possibly Jarrett from USC).

Only time will tell how this all plays out. We do know that the Vikings need another QB and Carr seems to have a lot of potential. The draft is April 28th.
